I have .85 oz of 5% EKG and .15 oz of 5.3% Fuggles in the freezer, so I'll be using those instead to get to around 19 IBUs, which is probably a little better for style anyway and keeps a similar BU/GU ratio (my efficiency is lower than recipe I'm using). Ferment at 67, raise to 70 on day 2 and hold. 1/21/25: First brew on new Anvil system, system was awesome with a couple of things worth mentioning. First: heated strike water to 158 (as per both Anvil and BF calcs) but the water temp only lowered 1 single degree when grain was added! So started off mashed in at 157 and it took a bit to reach the intended rest temp of 153. Started recircing after 20 min and gravity was looking great -- samples were coming in at 1.037-1.038 (very high), but for some reason samples got LESS dense as the mash went on (I'm confused?), and mash ended with pre-boil gravity of 1.031, on target. Boil-off rate in BF was clearly too low and ended with way over 5.5gal going into the fermenter(had to dump the last .75gal), and the OG only climbed to 1.032 -- sooo pretty low. Be aware and reduce boil-off rate/use less water in future batches. Kegging on 2/4. FG reading 1.013, so a little high...going to be a very light beer. Has already been cold crashing for like 5 days though so I'm just going to go ahead and package. Could have sworn I checked FG before doing so and it was like 1.011 but maybe I hallucinated the whole thing. Forced VDK was totally fine, not worried. Smells/tastes great, a bit like Bojangles' sweet tea. Looking forward to it.
