What are you doing with homebrew today?

Packaged up hop samples for testing, going to figure out exactly what I'm working with and take the guesswork out of my next couple brews.
So for the record what your Hunch Bulin?

I'm going Northern Brewer but a google search put me in early 80's for hop introduction in America.

A quick search on old American hop varieties put me onto Nugget and Cluster as maybe potential possibilities but heck it is a long shot from all the way the other side of the globe.

LOL, just sent out my Cluster, Northern Brewer, and Saaz for testing. Just brewed a pale with the feral hops and I'll sort it out from there. If it's good, maybe I'll try to propogate them.

Found these flies (see poor quality hence thumbnail pic below due to being taken inside my cupboard and also very ugly specimens) in the airlock of my Dubbel batch on Day 6 - were not there previous day. Not had flies actually get inside an airlock before but now sealed up with sticky tape to be on safe side. No bad smells or taste detected yet so hopefully none of the little feckers completed their journey into the beer. The very feint and smaller fly [slightly below and further to the left] was already breaking down to a smudge inside the outlet tube. it was a delicate job cleaning with a cotton ear bud rather than risk taking the whole bin lid off to take SG and dry hop at that point until I had made sure there were no more flies in my cupboard. I have got pretty quick at removing samples for hydrometer readings and dry hopping but I am not that quick. Thankfully not seen any more flies in there since.

OG: 1.062; SG: 1.008 now at Day 10. Yeast is almost done, some light froth but no flaky stuff - by my standards this extract kit came with a huge 20 grams for 4 gallons but I am glad I felt confident enough to whack the whole lot in. Kitchen smelled fantastic hours after I had finished brewing! Hop pellets (came with 28g of Goldings - added 3/4 that amount from Goldings I already have) now looking well swollen in the muslin bag. Dubbel tasting very nice and different. Glad I didn't go full load on the hops as I don't tend to go for extra bitter beer during Christmas hols this is for. But I only get a hint of malty chocolate taste along with the moderate bitterness as opposed to the chocolate/fruitcakey thing in the description - obviously there is time yet. Closest thing I have had to this was my Suffolk Old Ale which is a similar high ABV to that predicted (approx 7%). Not really what I was expecting but overall so far happy with my first attempt at a Dubbel.

Sounds like fermentation flys to me man.
They will try their hardest to take a swim in your fermenter for sure.
Thank God for the air lock I'm sure they all died in the liquid.

If I leave a beer out more than 5 minutes around my house I'll have a couple taking a swim for sure  to no end.

Are they the same as Fruit/Vinegar Flies otherwise known as Melonagastors? I have probably spelt the latin version wrong, never was my strongest subject. Anyway, I have exactly the same problem, have to make sure the area is clear of the critters before I do anything. They can be at their worst early winter, maybe looking for warmth/sustenance etc. I try and follow the Spanish method of leaving a small glass of wine out when drinking in summer and they mostly seem content dive bombing that kamikaze style. Disgusting to look at after a few hours but quite effective.

Yup same thing different name a real PITA to get rid of even for a pest control professional keep any beer spillage to a minimum same as open fruit and such they are tough little buggers to kill.

Once the winter hits they will all die with the cold until then well their drinking beer and not paying any board.

I cleaned a keg and the beer lines etc.
My little cleaning gadget suddenly doesn't seem to work anymore.
Somehow false air is coming in (and out).
Gotta have a good look and figure out what happened. First step is a thorough clean of the threads

I use a coaster or a lid in top of my glass because of those things.

I let Mr Hyde out of the basement and performed yet another experiment. I took 1 gal of hard cider and dropped some French Oak cubes in it and I took some left over tangerine and dark sweet cherry juice concentrate mixed in some water and poured it on the D47 yeast cake. It's going gang busters right now.

Talk about, er, experiment...

And already got the results back!!! Looks like some pretty good quality hops this year...

D Rest should be done tonight. Probably going to start turning the temps back down.
I have also been watching more force carbing videos some my dumb ass self might get it right this time. Once that damn keg is in the refrigerator it is a royal pain to mess with quick connects. My hand won't fit on top of the keg, and something with 5 gallons of liquid with that little room is very difficult to move around.
