My amber ale is tasting really good right now. However, the past several bottles, very soon after being opened, there is a surge of bubbles that I have to race to the glass. The beer pours with a big white head, which quickly recedes, leaving a finely effervescent beer. Might this batch be slightly over carbed?

Sent my last bottle of porter to a friend a few days ago and it did the same thing. Said the half bottle he had left tasted good

I had a Coffee Porter like that once a couple of years ago, probably a little over carbed. Try opening it and letting it sit in the kitchen sink for a few minutes before pouring, this worked well for me on that batch. If you want it to stay cold maybe open it and set it in a plastic dish in the fridge for a few minutes to let it off gas and hold temperature.
