I omened a custom cabinet shop for 15 years, the problem is you can buy cheaper than build today, I look forward to your next venture
Yeah, custom cabinets are VERY expensive. There's some pretty good RTA stuff out there. We chose the Valleywood product for the dining room and liked it enough to put it in the kitchen too. There's a few of them that are pretty much standalone in the corners and won't take much to install, so I might get started day after tomorrow. Hoping to be going well enough to start getting quotes for tops next week. All the cabinets have to be installed before getting the tops done. We've got a couple sources in mind.

My grandfather was a cabinet maker / carpenter. I spent the summer with my grandparents between my junior and senior years, as well as the summer after my senior year. I learned a lot about carpentry from him those two summers. I'm an engineer, not a carpenter, but I do OK with it.

Ouch Roach, that dentist story got me laughing and crying at the same time!
That must have hurt

Not going to "Like" the dentist story @RoadRoach! I've been lucky in that regard, crowns and a root canal have all gone smoothly. I have an excellent dentist. Plus I'm sure I've been lucky in that I've never had to have a tooth extracted. A torn meniscus in my knee has my kitchen remodel and brewing on hold until it heals. However I'll take a bum knee over the back issues some of you have had!

Gettin old ain’t for sissies, for sure. If ya gotta get old, better get tough.

I try to keep a self deprecating sense of humor. If I can’t laugh at myself, I shouldn’t laugh at others

3 cabinets assembled and two fully installed (on the wall). The base corner unit came with instructions that didn’t include at least five of the parts that came in the box. I found the hard way that the door was not reversible after having it fully assembled except for mounting the door. Gonna get a lot of space in the corner which was previously inaccessible. Pretty sure the pictogram they call instructions was done by a third grader.

New color scheme is pure white up, marine blue down, grey wall where exposed, and will likely use light grey tile for the backsplash. I dropped the wall cabinets down 1 inch to accommodate the same crown moulding we used in the dining room. We’re also going to use the same LVT. We talked about ceramic tile, but the floor joists are 2x8’s on 16” center with no blocking and are 12 feet long between support. Quite a bit of flex in the floor, meaning grout simply isn’t going to stay put.

3 down, 13 to go. Gonna have to figure out how to keep the old sink in place until we get the tops done. New sink will be an under mount apron farmhouse style, black stainless. Not sure yet what the missus wants for tops yet.

Piece of plywood, with a cutout, laid on top of the cabinet. When they come to measure, you'll have to disconnect it.

I like it! I may have to plagiarize that one

Exactly wouldn't want to do that in a fermenter.
you could, just have to make sure you seal the holes. use a clouple washers and rubber orings. it would work. we punch holes and weldless bulkheads.

Disconnecting takes about 5 minutes now with all new supply lines and drain as well. I still have the old counter top which I’m gonna just lay on the new bases until we get the new countertops. Not quite enough to cover all the new bases, but a lot cheaper than a new sheet of 3/4 plywood.

Day 2 of the cabinet assembly and installation. Finished the wall cabinets on the west wall and got the corner base and adjacent 3-drawer done. 6 down, 10 to go

2 more bases to the right of the stove will finish that wall. Taking on a more complicated job tomorrow. A 24” deep cabinet over the fridge, panel ceiling to floor, a 12” wall unit next to that, two 18” single door bases under the 36x24x12” for taters and rubbish bins. Takes all of 5 minutes to build the boxes, but installing the panel between 2 different depth cabinets is gonna be tricky to make sure none of the fasteners is visible and a dark blue panel looks good attached to white wall units. I may find myself masking and spraying part of panel. If I get all of tomorrow’s challenge done, I’ll be ready for the crown moulding, and won’t have anything else to do above the countertop except some custom shelves I’m planning for either side of the window. The window isn’t centered on that wall, so we sized the wall cabinets as close as possible and I’ve got some trim work to do.

Hope that was a coldie over there on the right and not too many headache tabs lol!

Starting to look good Roadie!

...And, the old countertop already has the right size hole for the sink! Bonus!

For that tricky panel: Even if it takes a whole day to make it perfect, it'll be worth it. As you know, it's just taking the time to think it all through.

And NO, it would NOT have been easier to buy that other house!

Just a Coca Cola, unfortunately. Still pretty sore from my torture session, er dental appointment, so still taking a few pain meds. No more bleeding though, which is a good sign. Haven’t had a coldie in nearly a week. Gettin thirsty.

Not sure it will be the same cutout. Still waiting for the sink to get here. It’s an underhung farmhouse sink versus this very stylish yellow porcelain model from the 70’s.

Today’s efforts went better than expected. I’ll let you guys be the judges.

The vent next to the cupboard used to be about where the lower left corner of the fridge is. I’d say I did okay for that relocation experience. This gets a butcher block top on it for the wood touch we put in every room. No interest in wood being everywhere, just a touch.

But finally having a cold one after a good day of remodeling. Looks like we’ll get this done around $10K not including the tops and splash. Would’ve cost at least 3x that to contract it. Got all the major materials on hand except the tops.
