Brewing with Ceoliac Disease

Man, it's an interesting learning curve you're on. I hope you're taking good notes so you can write a book later :)
Yeah I think I need to start making a malting log book.
How long the steeps are at what temp and how long the germination takes.
Then drying and kilning at what temperature and time.

Next batch of rice ready for drying
20230330_055557.jpg

Great germination I'm getting on the rice and alot easier than buckwheat I rekon no slimeyness.
This is going in the oven to dry on low until I get home from work

Hopefully it'll be most of the way there when I get home and I can kiln it off.

Found a free oven on the classifieds so Hopefully will pic that up on weekend.

I've been musing about building a kiln and thought I'm trying to reinvent the wheel and thought why not an oven with fan forced controlled temperature thermostat great insulation perfect :).

I'm hoping to malt another 2kg of rice and make a rice lager next batch :).

Oh brown rice is 8% protein content
20230329_165923.jpg

And slimey buckwheat 13% much better for head retention but hazy as hell
20230329_165948.jpg

I was looking at quinoa now this stuff is over 13% my packet in the kitchen is 13.6% so I might have a go at malting that soon and see if that helps with head instead of buckwheat.

Mashing buckwheat is a nightmare  think of rye malt for its guminess x 10!

No kidding ontop of this buckwheat is like a spunge if soaks up the brew liquor and turns it into a viscous mess making lautering a real PITA the Ondea pro should help with flow but it's not fun.

Gas or electric? I think I see a gas line...
Electric 3000 watt Westinghouse fan forced oven.

That's the electrical shroud.

One teeny tiny thing I gotta do is wire it into the house electrics  this will make or break the whole project... yeah it was a spur of the moment decision to get it now I gotta work out the details:)

In theory I should be good I run my 3300Watt boiler element on the standard house circuit the lights do dim every time the element flicks on and off though

Yup she works just gotta check how hot the wiring gets

Bloody ripper

I can set an end cook time for this oven so potentially I can have it kiln for a certain time period then switch off

I can also just dry the grains with the fan on until below 10% moisture content to preserve the Enzymatic power then hit some heat to then make pale Munich brown malt ect

As you can tell I'm pretty excited about this.

I'll be able to house it under my work bench we're my malt is stored it'll just poke out a tiny bit.

And all installed ready for some grain this is buckwheat

A game changer right there! Good luck with it.

OK, so instead of floor malting you are floor kilning. Good deal!
So 3.3 kW at 220 V is round about 15 Amps, so no big deal there, Your 3 kW oven will be fine.
Could this be the end of the mobile malt dehydrator? Oh No!

We may have to start a petition to ensure the survival of the mobile solar malt dehydrator :p

Yeah usually ovens have a dedicated circuit sorta like the Hot water systems.
The big fat wiring looks like it'd take plenty of current.
I guess I'm just running it on a 10amp circuit so didn't wanna raise suspicion from the missus if the power started tripping.

Had is running on warm with that buck in it all last night woke up not in flames touch wood lol!

Actually since you mentioned the solar mobile dehydrator I do have another project sitting in my shed that's gunna replace it:( sorry guys:).

Got a pool glass screen (for free) a week or two ago. You know that big thick heavy glass balustrading that usually fences pools in oh and high rise building balconies.
Yup that stuff.

Well I'm gunna make a box and put that glass on but I wanna make it into a outdoor patio table so it will be like coffee table hight and on wheels of course so I can wheel it out Into the pool area Into the sun when drying malt.
Then when not in use it'll be a patio coffee drinks table and off course matildas mess table you know for playing with play dough or drawing painting being a little human on.
Being a glass top it'll be easy to clean.

So I'm still gunna dry the malt in the sun down to 10%moisture or back to the same moisture content it started then I'll kiln it on my oven .

I'll be able to dry a larger volume on the solar dehydrator you can then store this "green malt" and roast it off to your desired colour later:).

I'll flick some pics as I build it

On the malting I don't spread it on a tray no more.

20230329_164059.jpg

This is one of my brewing buckets with 1 - 2mm holes drilled in the bottom.

This bucket fits into another bucket for the water steeping Usually overnight.

Then I pic the malt bucket up and let it drain completely.

For germination I pop the lid on the bucket (creates good humidity) and I can roll the bucket around or shake it gently to airate and break it up and stop the acrospires and roots matting together.
Oh and you can rinse the grain in the bucket easily to stop drying out.

It's all contained easy then and is just as effective if not more with the humidity which helps in the germination.

Think of @Zambezi Special mungbeen sprouting jar it's just a bit bigger:)

I guess if you start tripping breakers you will know, but in the interest of safety should make sure aren't overloading a circuit?
