Millet time:p so gluten free lol...

Has got me inspired again to keep on pushing on

This poddy is a spot light on Two bays brewing (Mark Farrell put me onto them)
Their Australia's only GF tap house!
And as I found out they order their GF malt from America which takes months to get her along with quarantine hurdles ect

Anyhow if anyone is Lurking this thread thought it'd be a good link:).

Oh on the homefront

At a whim the other day I soaked some store bought brown rice I use for cooking.
Wellyawouldnt believe it it's actually sprouting a WTF moment for me!

I honestly didn't think you could malt that packaged rice from the store hmmm

Will post a pic tomorrow to show yas.
Maybe Two Bays might help you out and sell you some malt??

Yeah been there and shook my head at the prices pale millet malt /kg = wait for it $18 /kg

As old mate put it in his pody yesterday Two Bays buy GF grains at 5 times the price of barley grain by the time you factor in shipping costs and the time it gets here then the added postage per kg to me here in Queensland that's where you arrive at that crazy cost per kg.

It's more affordable I've sound ATM to source the product and malt it myself :).

The other option is finding a millet farmer in Queensland that will part in 100kg let's say so I can get it cheaper than the wholesale price from the store.

Welcome to the GF Beer brewing scene it's like barley brewing was a couple hundred years ago :)

Think of it only up until recent history was pilsner malt available for pilsner Urkel so relatively speaking even modern day malts are a recent thing especially when it comes to the hombrewing scene.

I remember when I first started brewing all grain here it was hard to find malt suppliers.

It'll happen here it's just a matter of time oh and more people becoming Coeliac and wanting to have a beer again :)!

Brown rice from the store

See them little acrospires!

Crazy huh now that brings my price point down a bit.

It's a bit slower on the germination than buckwheat

This is just a test batch so I think going by what I'm seeing here it's worth trying a bigger batch:)

If you don't have a go you'll never know!

So we're just waiting for the first GF maltster here in Aus. Any ambitions Ben?

Mate you flatter me in this economic climate lol.

It's in the back of my mind though still walking the tightrope ATM trying not to fall off:D
Well if you're after inspiration, time for a road trip to Voyager? They started fairly small and seem to be going well (though they did own a barley farm which helps).

Ben, you continue to inspire me. I'd have switched to gin and whiskey months ago.

So, if you really go towards being a GF Maltster, you're going to need a couple more vans, eh?

Got some more supplies for malting
1kg rice and buckwheat

If I can successfully malt this cheep brown rice it'll be my most affordable grain at $2.50 / kg now that's more like barley prices :).

Luckily you can use the enzymes in the barley to convert the rice.
As for me the rice will be low in diastatic power so I'll he using endogenous enzymes to aid in its conversion well fingers crossed.

Apparently the Ondea Pro which I got mimic the enzymatic blend found naturally in barley therefore allowing me to convert it and I just need some more Alpha Amylase enzyme.

Just wondering if you couldn't use rice flour?
I did one brew with 1/3 malted wheat, 2/3 wheat flour and it came out nice.
But of course malted wheat has diastatic powers, so you would still need enzymes

Yeah definitely could but at$ 2.50 / kg this is cheaper ATM.

Plus it's been malted so the grain structure has changed.

Another reason is It's just another malting run I wanna learn all about what it takes to malt each grain:).

Oh I can get rice malt syrup at $3.50/ 500g so 7$ a kg that a great alternative but less yeast nutrients .

Successful I say!

This is the nearest thing I've smelt to barley malt all done and dusted in the bag.

It's malty alright and smells sorta biscuity

Even got the wifes snifta in on it and she said yup smells malty woohoo!

This has been the best yet it was pretty easy to germinate doesn't get no where near as slimey as buckwheat and the acrospires are easier and smaller to remove plus the grains are more similar to a barley grain.
Oh and it's only 2.50 /kg so if I screw up it's not as big a deal as millet at 10/kg

Happy days:)
