Decoction 1

2. Its darker but hard to tell
No pics of third decoction. Definitely browned the wort. I did add carafa before I drained the bag.

How long do you drain the wort for before putting the grain in a kettle for decoction? The few times I've done a decoction you could still see some liquid. How long, and how hot, do you cook the decoction before returning it to the mash? I ask because I didn't really notice a difference when I did a decoction. Maybe I was doing it wrong....make that probably.
I let it drain to where no more wort was dripping. I slowly bring it to a boil, turn down heat and stir/boil for 15-20 minutes.
I noticed a difference in my Helles. I brewed 2 straight batches the same and did a decoction on 1.

Hit OG of 1.049 and volume. Pretty good day. Yeast pitched. Now nature will do its thing.

Mashing a nice north german pilsner. 100% barke pils (except for the acidulated for ph adjustment)
Not used Barke. My Pils is 100% of Weyermans regular Pilsner malt and acid malt as needed. How does the Barke compare?

It seems slightly lighter in color, and has a more bready/cracker like character. I have always really liked it.

I brewed the Dark Mild this morning. It was probably the easiest brewday I've had in awhile.
