Looks like I will have to depend on more deliveries. Northern Brewer is closing all their stores.

Nice.
What's the dosage rate Minbari?
Oh I see 2 teaspoons per 5 gal.

I love it when they don't dose in Mls or metric I do suppose you guys love to use weird measurements like teaspoons and such lol

No excuse for not being able to do both these days with smartphones that'll do all the conversion for you. But then again, gotta know WHY you would want to convert the numbers.o_O

Well it's quite easy to do the maths when in metric.

For instance the enzymes I use have a dosage rate of2.2ml/kg of grist ;).

The Novazymes Enzyme I was looking at yesterday was 1.5ml/kg easy on brew day to look at your grist Weight and calculate the Mills need to hit the Enzyme dosage.

Yeah, I was only pointing out that so many folks can't do it in their head, and they're too lazy to use apps on the phone, too. Too many conversion utilities out there to get it wrong, and it ain't like folks don't have their phone with 'em these days. I use UnitsPlus on my IPhone if it's a small number and can't do the conversion in my head. Pounds to kilos is easy and vice versa (2.2 or 0.455). I just don't remember the conversion constants for oz-grams or fl oz to ml. So, I do what I call being lazy and use the phone just to make sure I get it right. I try to use my basic math skills as much as possible to keep the tools straight, though. I've been brewing with my phone a lot lately, rather than dragging the laptop up here for it.

Amen RoadRoach I always refer to the calculator when it comes to maths you know sorta like measure twice cut once.

Pen and paper twice calculator once :p

I sort of roughly know the equivalents and use a bit of brain work to check the result from calculators or converters.
Just in case I suffered from fat finger syndrome

If it is just guess work, who doesn't have an actual teaspoon or tablespoon? The big spoon is the tablespoon and the small spoon is the teaspoon:)
Those damn Americans with those crazy measurements LOL.

And the Ozzie and Kiwi tablespoon is 20 ml, whereas the European is 15 ml......

ya, I wish this country had just bit the bullet and converted to metric. everything is a multiples of 10, so much easier than:

3teaspoon = 1 tablespoon
1 cup = 16 tablespoon = 8oz = 0.5 us pints. (but not British pint, because that would be too easy, oh no no no, that is 0.4163 pints)
1 pound = 16 oz = 2 cups = 1 pint
1 gallon = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 128oz

dont get me started on ton vs long ton vs tonne vs metric ton. how about the british "stone" which makes zero sense.

@Trialben you arent off the hook either because in Australia its 4 teaspoon to a tablespoon

and even though someone came up with a system where all you have to do is move the decimal point, we cant do it! lol :rolleyes:o_O

It does keep us on our toes... And, who doesn't want a hogshead of ale?

I like to be confused by the European lagers on the side pulls too in the 20oz glass with 4oz of foam.

Is that fluid ounces or dry ones? (Volume or mass). A pint’s a pound the world around is the way I learned it when I was a kid. Apparently, the British don’t quite cater to that rule, and changed what the French (Advordupois [sp?]) gave them. Since the Aussies have always wanted to do what we did (kick the Brits out) they decided they’d twist the cat’s tail a little more, so that pretty much destroyed any relevance of the rhyme which means 16 fl oz of water weighs one pound. But, one liter of water (1000 cc) also weighs one Kilogram, 1 cc being 1 ml, weighing in at 1 gram. Most weight systems are based on some volume of water.

Not delivered, but I got 10 x 1 litre apple juice, weighing in at around 10 kg (excluding packaging)
And that juice will be cider pretty soon.

Cider being alcoholic apple juice, with apple juice being just apple juice :)

Because they are closing their retail stores, I picked up a Monster Mill MM3 (3-roller) yesterday. I went there expecting to pick up a Hull Wrecker 2 roller mill because it's cheaper. But all they had left was the Monster Mill MM3s. The 20% (in-store only) helped reduce the cost. But still hate that I had to buy one.

@BarbarianBrewer , that's exactly why I'm considering getting my own mill and start buying grain in bulk. Though my LHBS is a completely independent business, I can see where keeping prices down with everyone raising theirs is going to drive him out of business. He sells to a lot of the local micros, but it's a matter of time before an Amazon business account wipes out anything he can offer competitively and they start buying 'direct' cutting him out as middleman. He's the only one within 100 miles of where I live, so going somewhere to pick up enough grain for a single recipe is going to be less than ideal for the hobby. I definitely don't want to store crushed grain, either. It will go musty long before I can use it, not to mention, will certainly attract rodents a lot more. Having my own mill makes things a little more convenient for making what I need when I need it, or even making sure I use what I have first. I have a 'spare' closet in my garage that's pretty much collected a lot of obsolete computer hardware and some electronics that "I'm gonna get fixed one day". Time to bite the bullet and purge that stuff (taking care to remove all media in the old computers, of course) and put some shelves in to store grains on. Already have a fridge that's supposed to be dedicated to my brewing/beer, so freezing hops and keeping yeast cool is easy enough. I've cleaned out a lot of stuff in the garage already, but thinking I'll still be smarter to do the crushing outside (sticky dust on everything) after measuring out what I need. It's just making more sense to make sure that I don't put myself at the mercy of the LHBS just deciding to close the doors and call it quits. It's more apt for a little Ma and Pa shop to disappear than the 'big boys', but so far he's still hanging on. Probably that part about being the only one within 100 miles (that I can find) keeps him going. It isn't a big worry, but it is a worry nonetheless to get neck deep in this hobby to only have it impacted by the LHBS owner having a bad week. His prices have certainly increased, a lot, and I'm not surprised at all. When gasoline is $3.50+ per gallon, everyone's gotta raise their prices. We have Amazon Prime, which normally includes free shipping, but their selection of grains is somewhat limited and very few things are offered in quantities above 5 pounds. Nearly everything I saw was in plastic bags. I'm suspicious of that being from re-sellers making very greedy profits on old grain.

The scary part of this is that some of the better micros around here are probably going to result to buying lower quality grains, and obviously lowering their quality standards to keep the best return/profits in their product.
