Allowed 0.25 gal BK trub loss, 0.25 gal equipment loss, 0.2 gal/# (4.26 gal) grain loss. Would run off 1.62 gal from mash, so needed 5.13 gal sparge.
Ended up with 1.75+ gal more water to run off after collecting 6.5 gal. (0.09 gal/# over-estimate of grain absorption)
If grain only absorbed 0.13 gal/#, would have lost 2.95 gal total, needed 3.56 gal sparge water. That's where my extra water came from. Assumed too much grain absorption. However, underestimated equip/trub loss; I had 1 gal left in the BK (lots of hops). Probably got 0.5 gal less into primary, despite all the extra water! |

Notes
added some wort to primary, then sprinkled 2 packs yeast, then continued to rack the rest of the wort on it. Bubbling away 13 hours later.
A little sweet out of fermenter. Maybe cut the Special B and biscuit next time. See what happens after bottle conditioning.
