Target Water Profile
RB west coast IPA 1:2
Notes
======= 9/28/2024 ===============
this beer came out weird and corny, will not send to GABF.
since brew day went so well, Im wondering if this 3.5 lb corn is some how a mistake. maybe i never used that much in the past. unclear. will have to review notes. but next time i will lean more toward rice or sugar
======= 9/13/2024 ===============
post brew day notes :
- hit target pre boil gravity
- hit target pre boil volume
- not sure post boil volume
- had to add 1 lb sugar to hit OG
- not sure final volume but it seemed right
the volumes and gravities typically do not move that much after boiling on my system. i have a weak boil. going forward try to work this into the recipe numbers during planning
the wort is really light colored, very worrying at first but it was ok gravity wise. the corn really lightens it up i guess. but it was a lot of malt. doesnt make sense to me
======= 9/12/2024 ===============
re-brew!
resetting everything back based on the notes of went wrong below. switching to cryo for the mosaic but still need to try to brew a little more volume.
======= 9/12/2024 ===============
there was so much wrong with the execution of this batch that i might rebrew it today.
- did not get enough corn
- forgot to add the corn anyway
- forgot to get acid malt, planned to use phosphoric acid instead
- forgot to add phosphoric acid
- did not get enough pilsner malt, backfilled with 2row
- did not have whirlfloc on hand
- low volume batch, never incorporated the cryo hops
======= 9/11/2024 ===============
rebrewing this original bling bling cold ipa with the original mosaic centennial hop combo, this beer will be traveling out to GABF next month!
wasnt planning on doing any changes here but its brew day and just realizing i only have 1lb corn when i needed 3.5. also dont have any acid malt. also only have 10lb pilsner malt will have to supplement with 2 row. smh this could be way off from the original banger.
probably will not have enough time to clarify for the festival but it will also probably be crazy shaken up by time it gets to its final destination.
NEXT TIME consider using cryo
======= ~March 2024 ===============
Branched off of this recipe to create "What happened to that boy" as more of an american ipa using sugar instead of corn. that beer has its own recipe
======= ~Feb 2024 ===============
Bling bling 3 was brewed spring of 2024. came out low on volume. notes suggest using cryo next time....
...anyway Hops caused trouble coming from fermenter and in keg; had to siphon out of keg. ended up being corny not sure if from the corn or being oxidized.
Drain poured!
======= 11/7/2023 ===============
this beer came out pretty good, not as good as the previous batch though. the differences between this batch and the last are :
- this batch used 0.5 oz warrior bittering, the previous did not
- this batch used citra instead of mosaic, but in the same amounts and times
- this batch had centennial split up more. there was more shifted from later stages to earlier in the previous batch
this one did come out with a little more bitterness which was intended. but it doesnt slap you across the face with hops like the last one did.
======= 10/14/2023 ===============
reworking this for a round 2! (bling bling 2) this time using citra and leaning more on centennial. everything else - water, grain bill, yeast, etc. will keep exactly the same!
======= 10/14/2023 ===============
this brew (bling bling 1) came out fantastic! couple execution items to clean up - didnt seem to clear out fully, and 2nd half of the keg had faint oxidation.
the hop combo was really nice, mosaic dominated and there was no bittering. next time consider going 2/3 centennial 1/3 mosaic
also, i ran out of gypsum so i only used 0.5g, and mustve bumped epsom salt to 5g. I was also low on OG so I added 1/2 lb sugar.
====9/6/2023===============
finally about to brew!
decided to go with corn instead of rice. adjusted the water profile. its a little high on calcium but should be locked in to the 1:2 cl to so profile adjusted from tap water.
thinking about mash hopping?? maybe not for this since lager yeast
====8/1/2023========================
new recipe!
i think i have the malt bill down, 80-20 pils to rice. would like to understand the difference between using flaked rice vs minute rice (any flavor difference? any price difference?) and also between flaked rice and flaked corn (flavor difference?)
also need to figure out water, im guessing i can use my west coast ipa profile
also need a plan for hops. what bitterness we aiming for. going fruity/juicy? or classic american hops?
will go with 34/70 at 68 degrees
