I made my first beer while in university in 1985 and have been brewing more or less constantly since then. I love to cook and am from a creative "foodie" family and brewing is just another form of this art, which we love to share with friends and family. I'm also an engineer and the process of converting starch to sugar still keeps me thinking. I also love to watch a beer in high krausen.
I'm amazed by the beer revolution in the USA, where Coors was King (and all that was available) 20 years ago. Now I can enjoy amazing local brews in places as unlikely as Texas or Louisiana. I've brewed in both and if you ever saw the water chemistry, you'd know what I mean by "unlikely". Having lived in those places makes me appreciate brewing in western Canada, both with our near-distilled local water and more beer-friendly local temperatures.
My beers are seasonal and vary with time. I used to focus on porter and IPA but now lean more to the Germanic and Belgian styles, though much of the fun of brewing is in the art of exploring and experimenting! Recent favorites include a Saison, a Kentucky Common and most any well-crafted sour.
