I am that science guy. I want to hit the numbers because hitting the numbers means better IPA. I put the numbers together from various sources of inspiration, and a bit of just 'winging it'. Good beer is beer that hit the numbers AND tastes good.
I brew with propane on a wooden porch two floors up from ground in my apartment building. My theory is if I can build it, I can save some more money for brewing ingredients. I use a homemade 50' copper immersion chiller, a 10 gallon igloo cooler mash tun, and a 1/2 barrel keggle. I spend one day a week interning at a local brewery. An area of weakness I am aware of is art/creativeity. I am not a cook, so throwing things together for taste is something I don't feel comfortable with.
I mostly brew 10 gallon batches of IPA. I like hops, and I like my beers unbalanced. I can enjoy any craft beer, but if I am making it myself I want to make HOPPY beer. Most often I make a Citra and Amarillo hopped aromatic IPA. Thats what I usually have on tap, if anything. My kegerator is owned by a beer Co-Op and I am the only homebrewer, so the beer goes fast.
