What are you drinking right now?

I wasn't going to go there again but only fair to give this ruby a try as I think it is fairly new (though stand to be corrected on that point). Nothing remotely like the description so I won't cite it. Head dissipated ala cola and the carbonation was very similar too. I have very limited experience of ruby ales but this does not come close to the Woodforde's Ruby Ale extract kit (Tinsel Toes) I have brewed for the last two Christmas periods nor is it as good as the aldi one I tried some time last year. It has the weirdest bitterness in that it has absolutely no complexity whatsoever sat on top of just about the blandest beer I think I have ever drank. At least it will come in handy for visitors who only drink commercial beer - they deserve it. Coincidentally the previous commercial beer I tried (Banks's Amber Bitter) is brewed in the same place: Wolverhampton, England and that was pretty damn good and quite a bit cheaper too. Now happily sipping some of my cherry wine.

I’ve had hobgoblin Ruby ale before and loved it. Not seen in a while. I doubt it’s the same as a domestic one for you. The one is had was not bland.

Wow I am surprised by that, it got me looking for reviews, first one very similar to my experience. Then I noticed (and remembered from when I got my pint glass) Hobgoblin had originally been brewed by Wychwood in Oxford then later fell under a subsidiary of Marstons. Now it is part of Carlsberg (with the Wychwood association apparently dropped). So I wonder if they have changed the recipe at some point. [Edited to add: previously ABV: 5.2%, currently 4.5%]

It was super flavorful when I last had it. BUT that was probably pre-covid. It WAS in my top 5 beers. But been so long and since I started brewing German beers got more attention from me

first pour of my not quite cleared yet Pilsner. It’s tasty. This will be a great spring beer. Inside WLP 860 dry yeast. Which is the Augustiner strain, reputedly. So this beer isn’t as bitter as it would be with 34/70.

That looks rather like my current Dunkel. I’d thought it was a bit too dark but, now I feel a little better about it.

in better light it’s browner but not a lot browner I used 2 ounces of Carafa special II right before I pulled the bag out. I did a triple decoction on this one which gave me a little touch of color too

I didn't take pics, but that local Kolsch that I like is nice just before sunrise. I'm pretty sure I saw the green flash this morning. After getting up at 5am to go to the beach, it may be a very early night.
