Share Your Brew Tunes

Over the years, Minnesota Public Radio has bought up most of the non-commercial FM licenses in the state, and several in neighboring states. They have created a sizable network in the region and you can travel around the state and find an MPR affiliate anywhere. Much as I love public radio, I miss those quirky student-run radio stations where anything goes. Those of you that have those campus stations are fortunate.

I have over 2000 CDs and thousands of mp3 files, so I'm not hurting for selections. To make them available around the house I bought one of those "whole house" FM transmitters and connected it to my audio system. I set it to an empty channel and it puts out a stereo signal about 300' or so, just within the FCC limits. If I'm in the garage or outside, I just turn on a radio. I might set up a playlist, or just run a bunch in shuffle play. I don't have to mess with it while I'm busy brewing.

It's old-school, but it works for me. I've toyed with a few streaming services, but the tinny speaker on my phone, plus the fact that running that sucks down the battery makes it not so optimal. However, streaming is great on my desktop when I'm WFH.
I have a Sony speaker that runs on Wifi. I can stream from the desktop and put the speaker on my deck outside. It works very well.
Amazon has a decent premium streaming service, but I like the Spotify because I like programming my own stuff. My 80s taste goes very eclectic, and it is hard to find some of the crazy, English shi* that I like.

Yeah, here in Pennsylvania we're lucky with WXPN having done the same thing. You can get good music all across the state! On the other hand, tonight and thanks to whoever is spinning the tunes tonight over at The Mount, I've had The Carpenters ear worming their way through my head for the last 2 hours....

The Carpenters? On public radio? Oh no. The end times are near.

Glad you can get some otherwise good tunes.

This one is a little more eclectic LOL
In those days, the college stations played some wild stuff. The Rollins College station WPRK in Winter Park plays Reggae on the weekends, and I can dig that too.

Can't upload my link for some reason, but for one of the most under rated, never played anymore 80s rock song, google Greg Lake Nuclear Attack.

Always preferred McVie's vocals to Stevie Nicks. Sorry, just can't stomach Nicks' vibrato--South Park was spot-on with the goat reference.

I enjoy the early Mac work. Here's an underrated favorite of mine (yeah, I wore out the vinyl of this in high school). Includes the original "Sentimental Lady."

I totally missed this thread while I was away!. Depends on my mood. Sometimes I'll just pick a daily mix from Spotify. On the couple of occasions I pitched WY2112 I listened to Rush for obvious reasons.
Someone mentioned The Beat? Loves me some 2-tone ska. Here's a couple I like.

I'm all about ska! I have very eclectic musical tastes but I always come back to ska. I started with US 90s and early 2000s ska-punk and skacore but as I've matured I've recently gone back and gotten more into 2-tone era and traditional Jamaican stuff. Also gotten into some of the neo-trad and Nu-tone bands currently in the scene, Catbite is an incredible band out of Philly. As far as 2-tone my faves are The Specials (of course, side note I firmly believe that Little B**** was the original ska punk song) and Bad Manners. I'm starting to get more into Madness and the Beat but I think the fact that they skew a little more new wavey was a bit of a barrier for me at first. Anyways ska songs that I think might fit well on brewing playlist:
Beer-Reel Big Fish
Beer-Mustard Plug (totally different song)
Irish drinking song-Buck-O-Nine
Drinking for 11-Mad Caddies (almost more rocksteady than ska)
Special Brew- Bad Manners (Also the Skankin' Pickle cover version)

Really, sometimes I just forget to put anything on. There's always enough going on in my head to focus on it.
If I think about it and actually put something on, it's usually something like a mix from the Police, Van Halen, Led Zeppelin or anything unique and late 70's or early 80's.
The early development of unique sounds is interesting to me.
Joan Jett, Steely Dan, Paul Rodgers, Rush, etc are all so different and amazing.
Obviously, this is just the tip of the iceberg, but you get the gist.

I’ve always been partial to the old school acoustic stuff. Son House, Robert Johnson, Mississippi John Hurt…I would have loved to hang with those dudes.

If I could find a specialist Blues station on FM or Am over here I would be tuned in to that. Buddy Guy and John Lee Hooker are the two I listen to most in that genre. Second choice would be a Flamenco station - can't even find one on the world service these days. I like listening to classical music whilst cooking so that is a good consolation on my tiny transistor in the kitchen as I have either Classic FM or bbc radio 3. I don't tend to have music playing when brewing but some of my favourite songs about drinking are:
Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers - ZZ Top
Whiskey in the Jar - Thin Lizzy
Strange Brew - Cream
Black Label Society (Zakk Wylde) seem to like alcohol a bit, I listen to them now and again. Have playlists on deezer but that's confined to my laptop in the study.
And on my more mellow side:
Lilac Wine by Elkie Brooks is one I have always loved.
More humorous ones that spring to mind:
(Another) Christmas Song - Jethro Tull
I am a Cider Drinker - The Wurzles
Not to mention a few by Gerry Rafferty and Billy Connolly in their early days when they probably were drunk whilst playing.

A while back my Brother-in-Law and I, two big alt-country fans, put together our ultimate “Whiskey Mix”. This playlist was made for hot Summer days and back porches. And your favorite hooch. Drinking songs? Not exactly. Sipping songs, for sure.
