How are all your hops doing that you're growing?

Wow @Josh Hughes and @FrostyBeach your hops are doing well.
My centennial plant is hanging just a few cones, and seems like it stalled out in the midst of a prolonged heat wave. Since the heat subsided, there is new leaf growth, but I wonder if I missed the growing window. If such is the case, that is OK. I got myself a hops plant, and expect it will grow more vigorous and robust in coming years, now that I know what to expect.

Hops are starting to stir to action here in Suuny SE Queensland.

Grabbed some rhizomes one for me one for @Figjam72 20231105_132501.jpg20231105_132851.jpg
Fingers crossed planted them in 50/50 potting mix Compost.

Rigged up two trellises in Anticipation for some crazy hop action Here's hoping.
Made a crossbar at the top on both they resemble two Crucufixes.
I bet this will get the Neighbors Attention lol :D

Gee, Ben, there's a perfectly good pole, already strung up with wires, right there at the street!

Was listening to the latest brulosophy podcast on growing your own hops the other day.
One of the suggestions was not to grow them near artificial light because this might confuse them with the light hours and such for growing.

Well mines done just fine out there next to the streetlight.

Check it out they are already sprouting

Never had this issue maybe the rain we been getting has weakend the jute twine I use to string em up.

I've also had a few pest issues this year with white cabbage moth catapillars chewing the leaves a good blast with the hose sorted one batch out.

That's awesome Ben, nice to see that beauty in the wild where he belongs!

Second time in two weeks this has happened
20240308_170752.jpg

Next year I'm gunna get a better pole the wind from the rain swarls has been snapping my metal garden steak!
20240308_170758.jpg

The cones on this bine some are ready but I've has a second flurry of growth so was gunna wait till the end of march to pick...

Not sure half of me is saying just pick it and be done and do better next year other is saying string it back up and wait to pick it...

Harvested my hops today.

This year has been my best crop ever!
With the poles snapping under the weight I can see why!

I'm getting a melon type aroma coupled with citrusy thing on the nose

600g wet hop plus the 400g I got off the other bines that's easy 1kg (wet ) they say 1/3 weight once dried so that would easy be 350g Fing amazing considering I'm in Sub tropical Queensland growing a cool temperatate Cascade Ryzome.

This hickory is big and taking a lot of limbing to get to the logging stage. I bought a baby saw just so I'm not killing my arms and back with the 20". If anyone is looking for a lightweight 16", I can strongly recommend Stihl's MS 170

On my suburban lot, the electric 12" from Harbor Fright does what I need.
That hickory would be its end, though.

I grew some East Kent Goldings this year, they did pretty well. My plan is to brew a bitter with them in the next couple of weeks, in time for Xmas with a bit of luck.

If it makes you feel better I completely killed my first hop plant. No cones is interesting, is your soil nutrient poor? You could try some tomato fertiliser, or similar, if you haven't already.
