Going on a Yeast Hunt

Better get your grain bill and yeast asap @Robert68 ..watching the news tonight and things are looking pretty draconian there.....fences up and shelves empty! Stay positive...Test negative!
Well so far so good......but yeah definitely is taking a turn towards the worse. I just hope we dong get locked down like Shanghai.....that would be the worst. But I do have a full keg and half keg to help get me through should I get locked down.

@Robert68 I live in a woodsy area of Southern Maine here in the US and have done this once and only once - though I am not sure why I haven't tried again! I put a mason jar with a cheesecloth over it on my front porch. What I captured overnight was awesome! It was a strange yeast - it fermented similar to a Hefeweizen strain at first - lots of banana/bubble gum notes but if left, it would continue fermenting down to very low levels - 1.002! Yet it tasted great! I made two batches of beer with it and could have made more but I bounce around alot with ideas etc.

I recommend trying to capture your own. They say Fall is a great time of year to do so. I did it in May/June (Spring) and was honestly super surprised by the results. I'm just getting back into brewing after a 6-8 month hiatus but I think I may try it again this fall - right on my front porch :)

Here's to hoping you come up with something worth drinking! Cheers!

Heyya Muse....good to see ya! Funny you relate your "Woodsy" location as the guy that was interviewed, Bryan Heit, cited one of the better places to hunt is among a place with leaf litter...oaks and maples specifically...and he should know, he's a micro biologist!

Robert...hope you have the chance sometime soon to get out to someplace with leaves! How's it going over there? Stay positive....Test negative!

Fall in a fruit orchard is the best time and place. Yeast likes fruit a bit riper than we do.

Well that sounds positive homegrown Hefe Yeast!

Maybe next brew I'll fill a jar and pop it under my Mandarine trees and cross my fingers.
