It's economics. Cheaper to use virgin plastic than to recycle glass. Our single-stream recycling service still takes glass...
We don't even use multi-use bottles. One way only.

Well I recycle multi use bottles...picked up a case of "Old Milwaukee" fleet bottles yesterday for $2...

Honestly...
Hard to believe. Home country (the Netherlands) recycles 80% of glass (non returnable) and has stated that is not enough!

I really can't understand why recycling of glass is such a problem in the usa and canada

I've heard that soon enough the Sand used to make glass will be in shortage best to waste not want not.
Don't worry Australia has a long way to go on the recycling scheme.
Where I come from Country Queensland the town I grew up in still don't even have a recycling bin!

I would guess all of us recycle bottles... But we are a very small segment of the population.

Yeah...and most people there ride bicycles over cars! Go figure, dead dinosaurs are cheaper than sand!
