IBU Calculator Beer Bitterness

This IBU calculator reports how bitter your beer will be given up to six hops additions. It works for all grain, partial mash and extract style recipes.

International bittering units (IBUs) are used to tell how bitter your beer is (higher value means more bitterness). The IBU scale starts at zero for beers with no bitterness (fruit beers) and goes up to 120 for the super bitter and hop rich beers like Imperial IPA and American Barley Wine. You can use this tool when crafting your own recipe to ensure your beer fits the category you are shooting for.

This calculator has been updated to handle all grain and extract style boils by estimating the actual boil gravity based on the boil volume and target gravity. For a 5.5 gallon batch, 7 gallons is typical boil volume for all grain, 3 for extract. Based on Tinseth's equations. If you select pellets the utilization will increase by 10%.

* To look up the average alpha acid content of a hop variety, see our hops alpha acid table.

** Boil time in minutes, so if the hops are added with 45 minutes left in the boil, enter 45.
