3:25 Began heating 6 cups water in kettle
Had to cool water because overheated past 164 using too high a heat level on stove
3:55 Began mash
Toasted oats in oven 325 degrees at 10 minutes
FORGOT that oats were be part of mash. Added them in with 10 minutes left.
Extended mash for 30 minutes to allow oats time to contribute to wort.
Wort kept at or above 140 degrees entire time but to do so involved additions of sparge water from time to time.
6:25 Completed first mash.
DID NOT raise liquid to 170 degrees before removing the grains.
Drained grains using heated sparge water.
Added 2/3 LME to wort.
Set heat to boil
At boil, added 1 oz Northern Brewer hops
At 10 minutes added 1/2 tab Whirlfloc
7:30 flame out.
Used ten minute rest after addition of remainder of LME.
Amount of wort so low that we StarSaned chiller instead of boiling it in wort.
Cooled down wort using combination of ice bath and chiller. Due to reduced volume of wort, the chilling down to below 100 degrees took place in just over five minutes.
Siphoned wort to carboy.
Added remainder of C.Spg water to carboy.
Topped off carboy with filtered water from fridge.
Aerated carboy by shaking.
8:10 Took OG of 1.047 @ 68 degrees
Recipe with NB suggested OG of 1.046 WOOT!!!
Pitched two packets of S-04 yeast.
Transported carboy downstairs and fitted it with overflow tube.
Cleaned up equipment.

Set craft bottle in freezer while I cleaned Dad's desk so it chilled for about 25 minutes.
Poured crystal clear, no head, very light to little carbonation.
Alcohol content is there, however!
Somewhat dry finish.

Good carbonation, beautiful clarity.
Taste is lightly hoppy, some roastiness.
Took some to club bottling day and others thought it was a bit thin. |

Incredibly beautiful amber color and nice head. Proud to have done this one. May, just may, lead me to consider all grain.... |

A superior beer. Dark clarity excellent. Aroma of roasted barley is very pleasant. Little to no head of foam. :( Moderate carbonation nonetheless.
I'm gonna miss this beer being downstairs. |

Last bottle. Beautiful clarity, nice light brown head. Loved tasting a homebrew again. Did notice an off-flavor that was a bit sharp. Will try this one again! |
