Mash liquor @ 77C
Mash start @ 66C
Mash end @ 62C Cold malt!
13 lts of liquor in 6 lts of wort retrieved
0.55lts of liquor absorbed by malt, need to check settings.
Due to only 6 lts now in the boiler I had to alter the 22lts sparge liquor to 26lts (26+6=32)

Gravity spot on @ 1.045 however I have lost more wort than planned
This is partly due to the fact I upped the steeping hops @ 0 mins to 30g each instead of 10 mins.

Gravity spot on but 5 lts short, I think basically the extra 40g of hops plus I shouldn't have boiled for a full hour (not quite 26lts sprague liquor put through the mash) are the tow main issues with low volume.
0.5lt of wort will have been lost to the extra 40g of hops. |

I checked on this to do a gravity reading and there was still a large bubbly creamy head on the wort so I left it, Ill take a gravity reading on Weds which will be a week then. |

I dry hopped this tonight with 50g of Chinook and 50g of Amarillo. Maybe leave this for 4-5 days before crash cooling and then bottling. |

Short on attenuation but I am assuming this is a result of the other various cock ups during this brew along with the rye maybe? |

I had a quick taste of this to see if it was ready to take to the home brew meetup. It was certainly gassy but not quite there yet.
I need to leave this alone for at least a few weeks to let it condition a little. Looking good though, my initial thoughts are the rye and hops were fighting against each other but we'll see over some time. |

Hmm not sure about this one. Its a nice drink but maybe a little too salty? Don't know if that's the rye or the water salts. Not the hop aroma and flavour I had hoped for, there's a good dose of it there but not that zing I was looking for. I'm sure I remember thinking that the pellets didn't smell as fresh as they should. Fresh ingredients all the way! |

Orange marmalade bitterness. A very feint hop aroma and flavour which is teasing at the best of times. Not a great success for my first Rye ale, certainly did not wow me. I will maybe try someone else's Rye recipe next time and see what I am missing. |

Well interesting indeed.
I took this to a NBG meetup and it went down very well. I filled my growler up and passed it round to all.
The hop aroma was very prevalent, not in your face but better than it was. We compared it to Dan Barnetts Rye IPA which I felt was better than mine, maybe up the ABV on mine next time as the rye seemed to be complimented by the alcohol. |
