Added dark grains after 10 min mash out at 165. Stirred dark grains into top layer to wet. Vorlauf for 3 mins before pulling basket out and sparking. |

Tastes great, not too roasty. Dark brown color, not black like BF estimates (which is good). Hit the color I was hoping to hit.
Color is similar to a baking molasses that isn’t black strap. |

Gravity much lower than expected. This doesn't seem like an efficiency issue because the pre-boil gravity was spot on. I think there was something wrong with how the d-180 addition was calculated. |

I'm having a tough time explaining the miss in OG. If I remove the candi syrup from the grainbill, this tool estimates the same pre-boil gravity, which is expected, 1.059 and post gravity of 1.076. However, I hit that pre-boil gravity, so I would expect to hit roughly 1.076 as well. I was at 1.068, way short.
The print recipe feature shows a boil off of .87 gal over 90 mins. This Does not seem to be enough to go from 1.059 to 1.076. The dilution/boil off tool says I'd need to boil down 1.64 gallons, down to 5.75 kettle volume. This is way off from the estimate I'm getting from the automatically created value. I cannot explain this behavior other than there may be a defect in brewer's friend. I noticed that the last time I brewed a beer with d-180, I had a similar issue. |
