I brewed up a Blue Moon Clone today. All went well with no spills to the floor, my measure of sucess! Checked the gravity with the refractometer thingie and was a bit high at 1.057 , ok its a bit strong, its beer. Put it in the fermeneter with my Tilt ,1.047
Usually a point or two but never this far. I did change the battery before using, does it need some calibration when changing the batt?
I got my hydrometer out of storage and the 1.057 the refractometer got was the correct one.

Sounds like my fun using 3 different thermometers today, two of which were in agreement, but the newest was 10F higher than the other two. I know nothing about Tilts, but I love my trusty hydrometer and refractometer. Sometimes whiz bang techno gadgets suck.

Yes, you have to recalibrate it in water when you change the battery. It can't account for the differences that the batteries weigh from one to the next.

The measurement is also somewhat temp dependant. So if your wort was not to pitching temp yet, that can make a difference.

Edit:. Also when I first read this I thought it said "tit trouble". Lol

As @Minbari wrote, calibration is needed after a battery change.
No worries though: It will still show you when fermentation has stabilized the gravity. You can then measure the real FG once you package your beer.

The Tilt website shows a multi-point calibration procedure that is not difficult to do, but it requires some sugar.

I could not see why changing a battery would chang anything but battery weight does make some sense.

For now, just go to the calibrate page and charge it to what you measured. Good enough for now

I did the same thing but I actually calibrated mine when I changed the battery but for some reason when it went it the fermenter my readings were off. I did exactly what Minbari said and called it day. I’m still using it with my manual recalibration. My Tilts are just much appreciated windows into my uni tanks. My manual hydrometer is always the final word.

I am not too much obsevive over gravity. The Tilt combined with Brewers Friend trending is the greatest thing going since sliced bread, I know what is going on and when it is done. If I miss a couple points here or there, it's still beer.
The bubbler is going great today so beer is on the way! Tilt will still tell me when it is done, then I will have to do the recalibration.

I too have had calibration issues with my Tilt (notice I did not say KILT!) after battery change. My latest use of it is 5 points lower than it should be - pointing to the fact the battery is a little heavier. I must weigh them to find out... I have kept the old battery somewhere...

I believe when you swap the battery the TILT goes into calibration mode. Just immediately place it in water when you put the new battery in and wait a few minutes. I absolutely love my TILTs and Brewer’s Friend but never trust them for real FG numbers. I kegged a batch yesterday which my tilt reading was 1.020. Actual FG was 1.013. I like to bitch about it but I can’t imagine fermenting without it.

A real Scot doesn't need batteries for his kilt...
:p
