Scotch Ale Dr. Pepper Notes?

I'm about ready to bottle a 6 gallon batch of a wee heavy that's been fermenting a month. I haven't had many commercial strong scotch ales, so haven't noticed the Dr. Pepper effect. I'll have to look for that flavor element when I try mine--hopefully it won't be just confirmation bias.

Am I crazy, or am I the only one that often thinks of Dr. Pepper when drinking Scotch Ales? I've noticed it in commercial versions, and notice it in my first Scotch Ale recipe. https://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/recipe/view/1311356/big-red-willy-wee-heavy

I've never thought of it but, now that you mention it I guess there is a similarity between the sweet maltiness of a Scotch Ale and the dark-sugar sweetness of a Dr. Pepper. I'll try one of my 2021 Wee Heavies later and let you know.

Tasted my Wee Heavy and looked for Dr. Pepper flavors but didn't detect any. Our recipes are similar but mine only has Golden Promise and roasted barley. So the Dr. Pepper flavor you detect could be coming from the crystal malts in your recipe.

Did you use some raisiny/stone fruit like malts, such as Special B? I could see that delivering some DP notes.

Dr Pepper notes would be a feature not a bug here.

I have some Baird's 135/165L crystal I plan to use in an upcoming brew (tropical stout). I'll have to see if the DrP notes come out in it.
