I just got thinking about the base malts. I used the Rahr standard mixed with a floor malted Pils this time, but as I look back, I have been using mostly Pils or Otter with an exception of a Vienna that I was very fond of. This is probably the first American style beer I have made in a long time.I use Rahr Pale Ale (3-4L) for my base malt, I brew 99.9% ales.
I would be stunned if you could tell the difference between Rahr Pale and Maris Otter.
There is actually a Brulosophy experiment on this, there was no discernable difference in that exbeeriment.
The only lager I have ever brewed was the Shady Bohemian, I purchased Weyerman Bohemian Pils for that.
Loved that beer, I will eventually brew it again.
You mentioned in an earlier post that a stout is a winter kind of beer for you.
Different strokes for different folks, for me a stout (or a porter) is more of a time of day than a time of year thing.
That's the way I look at it...2-Row is the all-around that will do for lagers or Pales, depending totally on the other malts in the bill. I like Pilsner for lagers and I think that European Pilsners are better than domestic Pils malts but that may not bear out in actual comparisons. The Pale Ale seems to be a good go-to all ale styles. In the past I've kept Pils, 2-row and Pale, often along with Maris Otter on hand and right now that's what my inventory looks like but there's no reason for all those. I don't think I could give up Pilsner but Pilsner and Pale in varying proportions should take care of any style. I always keep Munich on hand and usually Vienna and between those and a few Cara and Roasted malts, I can come up with most everything. So i am currently building a malt order. This post got me curious.
At my scale the pale ale malt(Canada Malting), 2row, and non-euro pils are all within $.01/lb. So i started doing some research reading about comparing 2 row to the others.
What i have found is essentially 2 row is a happy medium between the 3 options. the pils is lower DP and lighter color and flavor. Im not sure on the DP of the PA malt, but its likely very similar to 2R while the malt imparts a little more color and flavor then 2R.
TLR
Staying with 2R since its $.01 cheaper and has more sugar and seems to cover more styles without being intrusive.
I also dont know that my price list is current with all the drama going on tarriffs wise.
I don't know that anybody's budget or price list is current with the drama going on. It doesn't help that the situation changes every three seconds. I'm waiting for what I see at Publix on Saturday. It ain't cheap going there in the first place. Gee, lets just piss everyone off and see where it get us. Sorry, rant over.So i am currently building a malt order. This post got me curious.

The rant is never really over, is it? Just sort of rolls around in a person's head most of the time.I don't know that anybody's budget or price list is current with the drama going on. Funny you noticed that, when I changed form MO to Rahr in my brewing software the OG/ABV dropped slightly, I had to bump up the grams to get it back up due to the slightly lower diastatic powerI got better efficiency than I had gotten with either the 2-row or Pilsner but that may be coincidental.
there can be some variation even within the same brand and company. on the large scale you have people who monitor and adjust all of that based on every silo fill. In theory i could be using the batch number printed on my bags to look up the actual break down on that batch.Funny you noticed that, when I changed form MO to Rahr in my brewing software the OG/ABV dropped slightly, I had to bump up the grams to get it back up due to the slightly lower diastatic power
i just love waking up to emails from all of my suppliers saying essentially "we stand by giving you the best price" when we all know that it will all trickle down to me and then i will pass it to my patrons. Trickle trickle trickle.I don't know that anybody's budget or price list is current with the drama going on. It doesn't help that the situation changes every three seconds. Ya we are all fucked. That's the way I look at it...2-Row is the all-around that will do for lagers or Pales, depending totally on the other malts in the bill. Good luck with grain prices. I was just looking into the market for malting barley the other day and it sort of all over the place. Apparently, the US imports a LOT of malting barley from Canada and dry conditions have affected yields in the western US so there's even more pressure. Unfortunately, Canadian yields are also down for the same reason and everybody is importing more from Australia.
It'll be interesting, to say the least, to watch how it all plays out. It's hard to see a scenario where consumer prices don't go up and American agricultural exports aren't diminished.
we all did...for no reason...I got beat up pretty bad on the market.
Huh. Since when??Porter isn't just for breakfast anymore LOL.
