New brewer from VT

I brewed my first beer today. I went big for a newbie and did a double IPA kit. I followed the instructions to a T, but the gravity is only showing 1.050 when the wort cooled. It was suppose to be 1.068. Not sure what went went wrong. Any opinions is appreciated.

did you cool your wort to 60 when reading it? most hydrometers only read true at 60
