I bought a brew system that came with 2 bins of “2 row”
Any guesses on the malt?
This is 12 lbs of malt x and 6 oz of acid malt
It has a weird sweet tea quality. I’ve had Vienna and don’t think it’s Vienna
Thanks

Not from the US, but listened to a bunch of US based podcasts. My understanding is 2 row is the generic term US maltsters use for barley malt with a bit more roasting than pilsner, but nowhere near as much as a Vienna or Munich. Pale ale malt is another term used for this. Breiss would be the most likely maltster if you're US based.

2 row is usually a base malt of ~2L (more than Pilsner, less than pale ale malt). It's my go to base malt, but I don't know what brand my LHBS carries (Briess, Rahr, Great Western, etc.)

Technically 2 row is a type of barely that many grains fall under, but on this side of the pond generally 2 row is ~ 2L and is 2 row pale malt, anything else would be specified ie marris otter 2 row pale ale malt we would just call pale ale malt

The confusion here is the guy obviously didn’t know what was in it so I’m looking to hear what you guys think the malt can be because it’s definitely not 2 row pale malt

If it's not the pale ale malt (and that sample looks too dark), your guess is as good as ours.

Yeah it’s definitely not pale ale malt I’ve used MO and golden promise before

Any hops in the wort contributing to the "sweet tea" flavor? I get that flavor from a lot of wort that's in the high single digits in SRM but relatively low in IBUs.

There’s no hops here this was pre boil, I mashed in and seen the colour and knew something was wrong lol

You sure it's just one malt type you used that's quite dark.
My guess is either vienna or Munich.
Any hombrewer wouldnt buy a sack or any specialty malt like victory biscuit or lite crystal.

I'd use it for pales.
A photo of the grains would be good on an white background pls

5 batches OMG that's like two months worth of brewing for me! You must have a party comming up eh?:)

Yup looks to me like its had a little extra kilning then your ordinary base malt.
I'm sticking with vienna or. Munich

I'm wondering whether it's even a base malt? How was your conversion and have you gotten any of it fermented yet?

My conversion / efficiency was within batch to batch variability of 2 row.
I made 4 “lagers” this weekend and a hazy
#1 10lbs 6 row 2 lbs chit 1 lb flaked barley 1.057 OG
#2 5 lbs redx 7lbs unknown malt 1.054 OG
#3 12 lbs unknown malt 1.053 OG
#4 12.5 Pilsner malt 1.056 OG
I believe it is Munich, I’ve brewed Vienna before and it doesn’t have that quality it was much more malty and sweet.
I loaded the 2 up with later additions Neipa hops and hooding the lager yeast takes out most of the residual sweetness so I can call them an IPL.
I haven’t taken any gravity samples since they were brewed sat / Sunday I won’t even check till mid next week really.

Thanks everyone.

My friend is having a birthday party mid November and requested a couple kegs, what’s the Ol saying efficiency with scaling or something.
I enjoy consuming home brew but to be honestly it is a bunch of work I like to just put my nose to the grindstone for a weekend and kick me feet for a bit just the way am I guess
