I just got a wyeast 1056 from a friend. It's been in the fridge and has not expired but the pack is already swelled as if it has been smacked. Should I use it?

Only with a starter to verify viability, or with another yeast as a backup.
second this, it might be a bag of dead yeast or it could be fine. a starter wont hurt either way.

I used skme 1056 that looked swelled. Worked perfectly

I’ve used some slightly swelled and it was fine. Pretty sure Wyeast says it is ok

Slightly swollen is ok to use. Fully inflated and it is a crap shoot. No way to know without a starter or a backup. I had the same issue about a year ago. I didn't have time for a starter so I tossed it in and hoped for the best. After 36 hours of zero activity near the yeast's upper temperature range, I returned to my LHBS for a second pack of yeast.

Well folks I added it to a starter that already had some S-04 going. Right now I have 1200ML of an active starter for 2.75 gal of beer. I don't have my OG yet since the boil is not done. The recipes calls for a 5.6% beer. I don't think I'm going to pitch it all.

Well I pitched it all and it has gobbled up sugars like crazy. I was looking for an FG of 1.012 and according to the Tilt, it is at 1.009 and still chugging along.
