So I'm setting out tonight to brew a lovely small batch, and as I'm setting up outside I see there are a ton of gnats flying around. I've got a fan to blow them off a bit and will keep an eye on it, but I'm pretty sure there's going to be a gnat or two in the beer (or ten), at the boil phase. So my question is: how bad is that?

Yeah, they will be sterilized so no problem there, and likely never be seen again. They are bad only if it freaks you out.

As an aside, it sounds like a good opportunity for a goofy beer name to me - which I try to never miss. :) "Dead Gnat Ale," or "Fly in the Ointment?" I thought about something similar when I caught a gnat in an airlock recently.
Gnatty lite

I brewed outdoors for years so I invested in a stainless screen scoop with a handle, works great for the boil
