Brulosophy 2024 Survey

kinda surprised that only 28% of people are all grain

Some interesting data in there. Lots of all-in-one electrics out there.

I was surprised how many that are like me and just use spring water.

I didn’t see many surprises at all, as not much has really changed in the last 20 years with demographics. What has changed is the number of people going simpler (more all-in-ones) and not buying the old wives tales parroted around the internet. That’s a good change I think!

been brewing more than 10 years. never saw why you needed a 3V system

Thank you for sharing the survey. Neat information to digest. The closing survey statement was insightful.

Seemed a bit cryptic to me, I'm not sure what was meant by it. You will always have the rude responses to the surveys along with the typical immaturity found everywhere on the internet, I'm not sure it needed to be mentioned at all.
Ironic that they Respond with rude childish insults to the people that made rude childish responses, lol

Me? I didn't really "need" a 3v system, but I made a ton of 11 gallon batches with the all-electric HERMS with a tippy dump. It was great for the time, as I could easily program the control panel to heat 13 gallons of water to 160 for me, hold a 25 pound or more grainbill mash to within a degree, batch or continous sparge to the BK (or no sparge if I wanted), and then boil 12 gallons, while I used the tippy dump to dump my grain, all in the comfort of my heated laundry room. The CFC and HLT stirrer really were nice, and I did continous recirculation. I made award winning beers with that system, and it always was dependable and repeatable without any issues.

I have always brewed indoors, and the 3 v large system was all-electric, dependable, and large enough for 11 gallon batches. It worked for me for a really long time. I think I had it about about 12 years and it was well-used. But now I'm older, drink less, brew less volume (only 5 gallon batches mostly now), and want some of my laundry room space back. I've been brewing for more than 20 years. All of it has been right for me at the time, from the cooler and bucket in 2004 to the Brewzilla in 2024. Maybe......I'm not really that thrilled with the all-in-one's limitations. But for now, it will do.

Didn't mean you specifically.

I think that's the "initial" figure. The "Current" version of the graph is 96% all grain. Not sure when "initial" was...

At the larger scales, 3V is needed. For me, sometimes even 5 gallons is too much, but if I still have to clean it the same, might as well make 5 gallons.

Somehow it always gets consumed.

Best news of the survey is they had 1000 more responses in 2024 than 2023. That's a nice positive indicator to see after all the doom and gloom about home brewing. Seems like they doubled the number of survey responses from 2023 if I'm reading it right.

Needed? No.
Wanted? Absolutely!
I use 3 vessels. To me the "all in one's" are kind of like using a Leatherman knife to fix something. Yeah it has a screw driver, both philips and straight blade and a needle nose, plus a knife, but it's a poor substitute for the single purpose tool.

But I may be in the minority on that one. I get the "less stuff to clean", but you really only need to clean the boil and the mash, the HLT is always just water.

All in ones are the shortcut. Not exactly a leatherman, more like the Ace Hardware $39 handy tool kit, as opposed to the $28k Snap-On Deluxe. Three-vessel systems are THE gold standard, starting at a couple gallons up to hundreds of barrels, they all work the same.
