Baked bottles?

Once I scrub the bottles clean, would it sterilize them if I were to bake them in the oven? Maybe 300F and let them cool naturally (i.e. don't open the oven until cool). A little foil hat to keep the insides clean. Sure I can sanitize them with starsan, but I was just thinking...

Always used a bottle washer with pbw and then a dip in starsan right before bottling. Never had an Issue
 
The times are longer than I would've guessed. I used to work in a lab that had an autoclave for sanitizing glassware but the added pressure speeds things up
 
Seems like more risk and time added to bottling day. More importantly, the oven would not be available for a pan of nachos. :D
Nachos are an important consideration.

I keg exclusively but have a case of 32 oz Boston round bottles I use as growlers. I want to put the remainder of a near-empty keg into a few of them for extended storage (couple months). I can bake them and leave them as sterile, then a quick dash of starsan, fill em from the tap, and hope they last a long time. Certainly can't be worse than Starsan alone.
 
Does your oven have a timed bake feature? You can put the bottles in the oven in the evening and take them out nice and cool first thing in the morning. No nacho transgression!
 
Apparently in the oven is true sterilization, not just sanitation like with Star San
True that, and unnecessary. Run them through the dishwasher on sanitize with no detergent or rinse aid and that will be enough.
 
I don't bottle either. Only to deliver or trade beer. Even then, I've gone to cleaned and sanitized used Kombucha bottles. They hold pretty well and you don't need to tell anyone to return your bottle.
 
I got a big laugh driving into work this morning listening to a 2017 episode of Experimental Brewing and bottle sterilization in the oven came up.....planetary alignment?
 
Living in the paranoid world of the word sterile, I thought that needed pressure as well? Or is it just that it needs pressure to be sterile in the time frames most businesses will tolerate?

We only need sanitation. Sterilization is unnecessary.
 
If you really wanted to sterilize them, just boil them for a few minutes. It's really that simple.

Pressure simply raises the temp at which the water turns to steam. Higher temp = quicker sterilization
