Hey, I was wonder if there are any home brewers in Amsterdam who would be willing to let me look over their shoulders on a brewing day? I am new to the scene, and would like to learn as much as possible before I start investing in equipment and ingredients. Thanks in advance!

Heya, I think you would have more luck asking on the Dutch homebrew forum.
If you are not a Dutch spaker, there is an English sub section in it.

Many thanks Zambi for the tip. I found some contacts and am now in touch with an English speaking group in AMS.

We can't help much with the look-over-the-shoulder part but, you are more than welcome to ask questions or show what you've done. We're pretty a laid-back group who love to give advice...especially if you are looking for advice on how to spend your money :D ! Do you know what kind of setup you are thinking about getting? Whatever type system you are looking at I'm sure someone on the forum has a similar system; although maybe not the same brand. Good luck on your homebrewing journey and I hope to see you back.

Thanks very much! I will come back to you on this for sure. In general, and for the moment, i am planning to go straight to mash brewing (maybe I am already a bit naive as everybody seems to suggest starting first with kits and extracts). In terms of equipment I want to keep it small at first, and make batches of 10-20 litres. I saw a couple of interesting stainless steels fermenters/boilers. In general I want to avoid plastic wherever possible. I found a group in Amsterdam and they already said they would let me join a brew day - so that will be useful. In parallel I am starting to develop an equipment list that fits my needs and capabilities. So, I reckon it will be another few months until I can really start experimenting myself, and then happy to share my progress here. But, thanks for your encouraging words and openness! Much appreciated.

I've yet to do an extract brew :)
10 litre is quite a common size to brew in the Netherlands (a lot of recipes are for 10 litres and since it's metric, it's easy to scale up and down).

Don't shun the plastic fermenters too quickly if you are going to use a regular brew kettle. They are light and allow you to see the activity. They are not that expensive, and the large opening at the top allows you to clean it fairly easily.

Thanks Sandy, your point on visibility is very valid and well taken. I just don’t trust these things in view of microplastic pollution. Anyways, you gave me something to think about because indeed i would want to be able to check visually the fermentation progress.
