    White Labs PurePitch w/o Starter?

Hi all, I'll soon be brewing a Trappist Single and am debating on whether or not to build a starter. I have a White Labs PurePitch culture that's about 3 months old and my hoped-for 5.5 gal of wort will be around 1.046 SG. This is my first time with the PurePitch. All the White Labs...

Yeast Starter: how little is too little?

I recently received a few packets of Crossmyloof yeast from my friend @AHarper but one (the Belgian, which unfortunately is the most interesting to me) had somehow been slit open and spilled. Our friends at Royal Mail re-wrapped it in a plastic bag, and some of those yeast 'pellets' made it over...

    Starter Checkbox in Yeast Section

New to BF, and just wondering how using the starter checkbox affects the recipe calculations. I am using a starter, and check the box, but it doesn't have a place to enter starter size, and doesn't seem to change anything about the OG, etc. Related question is: does it or should it affect...

How many cells in dry yeast packet?

I have a packet of SafLager S-189 from Fermentis and I'm trying to figure out how many sells are in it. The packet is 11.5 gram and the expiration date is 04/2021 (which, I think, means it's 14 months old, as Fermentis gives their dry yeast a 36 months stated shelf life). Reading BeerSmith's...

How can I store a yeast starter?

I made a yeast starter about 24 hours ago. I intended to brew today, but some things came up and I was unable to brew as planned. Can it be stored? If so, for how long? Should I just store it in the refrigerator? When I get ready to use it (potentially next weekend), what do I need to do?

Yeast starter from the same wort

I'm considering making yeast starters from the same wort that I'll pitch the yeast into. My typical pattern is to build a yeast starter the night before and pitch the whole thing. I read that can affect the beer flavor a bit since I'm pitching about 5% of my total volume with a different beer...

"How to Brew" Yeast Starter Recipe is WRONG!

I'm halfway through reading John Palmer's book "How to Brew". Decided to make my first yeast starter last night follow the starter wort recipe listed in his book, which is 1/2 cup DME to 2 cups of H20. I ended up getting a 1.090 gravity wort. I had to water it down and reboil, had a boil over...
