Missed sparge temp of 169 due to use of BF calculator (AARGH!) Hit 160 instead.
Henceforth will always boil the sparge water to reach sparge temps.
Attempted use of lid to maintain grain bed but the glass lid to the 5 gallon pot was so big that I'm afraid all I did was run the water down the sides of the mash tun instead of through the grains. |

Grains ground the day before
8 gallons water purchased from Wally World on way to house from Sunday Funday @ Squeak's and Liz's
Set up in garage as usual
Pre-heated mash tun
Hit infusion mash temp of 152-54 D with 3 gallons strike water using BF calculator.
Had sparge water heating well before mash tun was drained. |

As stated, ran flame to boil off excess wort before beginning timer. At or near 6.5 gallons commenced timer thusly:
7:45 Add 1 oz Chinook hops
8;25 Add 1 oz Perle hops
8:36 Submerge immersion chiller (which had been soaking in StarSan all afternoon, then rinsed with water and sprayed before immersion with StarSan)
8:41 Tossed in tablet of Whirlfloc
8:46 Flame out |

Cooled wort to 80 D in ice bath fairly quickly.
Siphoned into FerMonster which aided aeration substantially.
Hauled carboy downstairs and let solids settle before siphoning into conical.
Waited an hour for the solids to settle before siphoning into conical. Amount gained was disappointing. Wonder if:
1) I should have waited longer to let the solids compact further to get more clear wort, or
2) Whether I should have siphoned all of it into the conical, solids and all. Beginning to wonder if the yeast needs the solids for best processing of the wort.
Did note, however, in the cleanup that some hops did escape into the wort from the hop bags. That was a factor in deciding to just transfer the clear wort into the conical.
Pitched one pkg White Labs American Pale Ale WLP060 (with used by date of July 2019!) and a dry yeast pkg of Safale US-05 for backup.
Plenty of headroom in the conical so no blowoff tubing established and used round head for first time as there is no need to maintain cooling for this yeast:
Optimum temp 65-69 D for fermentation
Room Temp 63 D
Set conical heat control to maintain temp at 67 within a 2 D range. |

Kegged with 25+ psi
Without hop bags. Some stoppage that resulted in clouding the brew. Not sure what or why I could not get the remaining wort from the conical at the lower valve. And what I did get added cloudiness to the brew. |

PSI had dropped to 10 so what the hell, I tapped the keg for a glass or two.
Still needs more carbonation, but flavor is very drinkable. Bit buttery/diacetyl, but that will pass with time.... |
