Fucked up the mash pretty badly. First ten minutes were around 158, way too hot. The issue is equipment specific: once I'm ready to mash in, I need to switch the PID over to manual mode with 0 power and continue to monitor the temp throughout the mash. If it drops down I can switch back over to automatic at mash temp.
So - mashed too hot, then I noticed the kettle starting to overflow after about 10 minutes. I'm pretty certain this happened because my mash arm was not submerged in the water, and it wasn't adequately circulating the mash water. I'm pretty certain the bottom of the kettle got too hot and caused a minor "boilover," which means part of my mash may have been far warmer than target mash temp. I have no idea if this beer will ferment... |
