WARNING: Kettle losses > 2% detected which throw off OG calculation for extract/partial mash recipes in batch target 'fermentor' mode. Solution: Reduce kettle losses, misc losses and hops absorption in equipment profile, OR set batch target to 'kettle' and do a full wort boil. See batch target FAQ.

Notes

This recipe is a modification from Evan Altman's "Hair of the Goat Rauchbier"
http://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/recipe/view/37492/hair-of-the-goat-rauchbier

From Evan's original description:

"Smoky and rich, with a blend of noble hops for balance and flavor, this is going to be a great beer to share while commiserating the season gone by and look forward to next Spring."

My own immediate modifications from the original recipe

  • switched to 6lb LME Munich (instead of using 5lb Munich DME and 1lb Light DME)
  • swapped hops 'domestic hallertau' with 'Hallertauer Mittelfruh'
  • shop was out of Carapils - so used half the weight of a Caramel 40 as a replacement (if I recall weight correctly)
  • toned down the hops a bit - basically reduced by 25% for the hops added during boil - kept dry hop amt original

    This is a monster on

  • steeping grains
  • hops
