Huge pain. I adjusted the mill to get a finer crush for better efficiency and also cut a gal off the strike water (8 to 7.1 gal) and used 1.5lbs of wheat in this. With the HG recirc through the lid it quickly got to the point where water was piling up on top of the grain bed. The temperature would spike quite a bit and then come back down. Stuck a separate probe in and found the temps were really like 144 in the middle of the grain bed itself. Though I may have smelled some burning wort/caramelization - not sure if I was in my own head or not as I was looking for that. I tasted the mash it was good. Decided to stop recirc through lid and go with the whirpool port. Obviously not enough there to really do anything to the whole grist but it got the temp stable at least and better than nothing. So temp around coil is 150 but in the grist is about 142.
Lessons learned. I adjusted my mill back to the about 0.04-.045 rather than the 0.03 I had it at for this brew. Thinking about doing rice hulls next time or trying the malt conditioning. |

Had a lot of mash issues. Thought pre-boil gravity was decent though but still came in under. Volume into fermentor was 4.5gal, so way off the mark there. Only 2nd time brewing with this system though so still trying to dial things in and get familiar. |
