thought I had ~1/2lb columbus, but I was wrong.
actually have between 6 - 7oz.
plan: continue as normal, but add columbus at flameout BEFORE simcoe. whirlpool 5 min. add simcoe. chill. |

Appearance (3.5/5): Very black, somewhat transparent. A tan-ish head that starts thick and disappears quickly.
Aroma (4/5): dank, perfume, berries, subtle coffee/smoke, pine, citrus.
Flavor (3.5/5): Earthy, piney, DANK, some roasty/smokey finish.
Mouthfeel (3.5/5): medium-bodied, nice carbonation. Silky.
Overall (3.5/5): Pretty good. This beer smells absolutely amazing! The flavor is somewhat thin, though. The hops come through nicely, but I think there might be too much of a dark/roasted element to it. There needs to be a bit more malt flavor to balance out such intense bitterness (maybe backing off on the roasted malt may help with this as well...). Texture is great: just the right amount of body, somewhat viscous and silky.
This has been a hit and favorite so far at the office. |

Appearance (3/5): dense, tan foam that persists a very, very long time. Have to be careful when pouring so as not to overflow the glass. Somewhat overcarbonated, I think.
Aroma (5/5): Caramel, perfume, berries. Fantastic. The smell is absolutely intoxicating.
Taste (4/5): What it smells like. Caramel, berries (blueberries?), some citrus/pine background. Some bitterness from the malt and the hops obviously. The sweetness/hopiness is mostly balanced (Paul Bennett made a remark like this last week).
Mouthfeel (4/5): very smooth, slick. I'm starting to appreciate what I think oatmeal is doing to this beer. Medium-modied, but feels filling.
Overall (4/5): fantastic beer. I think it's gotten better over the last couple weeks. I remember thinking this beer was too harsh due to the roasted character. Now, that roasted character has subsided quite a bit, leaving the hops to shine. I think there's a very good balance between maltiness/roastiness and the hop flavor. Still might be interesting to see what happens by reducing the amount of roasted malt slightly. |
