filled two 3-gallon carboys a little too full, guessing more than 2.5 in each. |

(lager version)
F - malty-sweet, a touch of bitterness hops and pineapple right at the finish. finishes dry, but some malt lingers for awhile. pretty sweet overall, with not much to balance it out.
A - rich bouquet of malt, some subtle lemon citrus/kombucha aroma
M - not very carbonated yet. fairly thin.
O - not bad. It's pretty refreshing, but needs something to balance the malt sweetness in the flavor (maybe some biscuit malt, for example).

Lager version
L: clear 8/10. pale yellow. one finger of head that disappears quickly
A: european-ish malt aroma that's very subtle.. somewhat lemony. pungent lemoniness that reminds me of kombucha a little bit.
flavor: initial sweetness, subsides into grassy, lemony tones. I wish the malt were more dominant over the lemony/grassy hops.
mouthfeel: prickly carbonation. some bottles have been more "prickly" than others. not sure what that's all about. most bottles have fine carbonation. medium-bodied
overall: easy drinker, armoa and flavor are somewhat strange for their pungent lemoniness (i blame motueka late hops), good looking beer. a lot of sweetness that's not balanced out by anything.

Aroma - lemony, slightly grassy, somewhat malty
appearance - mostly clear. a slight haze but no sediment visible. a modest head, 1 finger high, which disappears quickly
flavor - initial malty sweetness, with some pineapple and lemon to finish. honey. extremely pleasant. very drinkable!
mouthfeel - "just right" amount of carbonation. very smooth. highly quaffable.
This version has a lot less sulphur in the armoma/flavor than the WLP830 version. Something makes this beer actually taste more crisp/lager-like than the WLP830 version, too. I really wish I had submitted this version to the comp. Oh well.

Appearance (4/5): crystal clear, like stained glass. Head was about 1 1/2 fingers high, and disappeared quickly. A slight residual foam lingers perpetually on top.
Aroma (2/5): Lemon, hay/grassy/grainy, some more slight citrus, maybe lime? A very, very small hint of sulphur. Something of kombucha, which might come from lemon/lime character of Motueka hops. I'm not really that into it.
Flavor (3/5): Malty-sweet, zesty grain. The bitter/sweet balanace is definitely skewed towards the sweet on this one. Not much hop aroma or flavor.
Mouthfeel (2.5/5): medium-bodied with prickly level of carbonation. Probably too carbonated, to be honest. There isn't enough "chewiness" to balance the amount of carbonation, so it's somewhat off-putting. Long, grainy sweet finish. When it's first poured, the mouthfeel is very creamy (the head is very creamy).
Overall: Beer is a bit sweet for my taste, though I think the malt character, with the overall character of the grain, is good. I think that it could be less sweet, and have a bit more hops to balance it out. I'm not a fan of the motueka hops as a finisher, since the lemon/lime character makes it seem somewhat kombucha-like. Could be interesting to blend with actual kombucha?
edit: This beer has definitely become more drinkable than it was previously, looking over my last few tasting notes. Should remember that for the next time when I use WLP830 to do a hybrid beer like this. |
