Rough start. Strike volume seemed low, given my desire to get more volume and because brewersfriend is seeing the 16 oz addition of the candi sugar as a volume increase. It's 16oz by weight though. Not sure what's happening exactly. Didn't take the time to set up completely. Didn't have the salts measured. Strike temp after mash in was still 158-9. Turned burner off completely and stirred a lot. Came down slowly. |

Readings anywhere from 1.050 to 1.060. Really don't like how inexact this refractometer stuff is. Still a lot lower than prediction. |

Honestly, no idea how that reading was a full 10 points lower than predicted. However, I did bump up water volume to about 4.3g and added probably 8oz (by volume) of candi sugar (package says 16oz by weight). Very happy though with the volume result, I was able to stop a bit earlier than usual, leaving a wee bit more in the kettle of very cloudy gunk - mostly just grain, I think, but some tiny hop matter, no doubt. Also, used hop basket for both late addition hops and to filter from kettle to fermenter. Using it for the late additions meant that there was very little hop matter on the way to the fermenter to filter out and I didn't have to stop to empty it at all. Went quicker, certainly. |
