OG was higher than anticipated. Brewhouse efficiency was estimated at 75% efficiency, but per calculations looks to have been closer to 83%. This could have been from 1) a lower mash temperature plus the single decoction, 2) not weighing out the two 5lb bags of Golden Promise, and/or 3) the 20 minute aggressive boil of the first gallon and a half of wort, which decreased our boil volume a little (though I did add some extra wort from the mash tun to try to get close to my pre-boil volume. BUT, our pre-boil gravity was also much higher than anticipated, so my guess is it was a combination of all of these factors that got us there.
Next time, I'll weight the 5lb bags and not just dump them in, and increase my efficiency expectation on decoction beers. Also, I put 5.5 gallons in here, but it could have been a little lower. I'll need to look how close I actually got to that volume. If I'm closer to 5.25 or 5 gallons that would account for the gravity bump also. |

78% attenuation! Definitely will be boozier than planned, but still us some body. Tasted good, but young out of the fermenter. |
