what a fucking day. the flaked oats i used were feed oats that i boiled and attempted to flake on my own. my conversion was TERRIBLE, like 67% Added about a pound and a half of quaker oats and 2 lbs of pale ale malt to make up the difference. in retrospect, it was too much. i included the pale malt to get some enzymes back in the mash since i was nearing mash out temperatures. Conversion completed quickly, and was high compared to what the recipe should have been. long slow effective sparge boosted efficiency further. need to do a water brew on the system to figure out what my new losses are with the addition of the plate chiller, also i want to double check the markings on my sight glass. read 5.75 gallons hot with boil complete and only moved 4.5 to the fermenter, added boiled and cooled water to high gravity wort to achieve 5.8 gallons of target gravity wort. next brew will be a water brew to work out some kinks. |
