First Attempt at BIAB. This was a test of current brew equipment being able to handle a small batch. When calculating the recipe with water and kettle volumes, I forgot to account for water displacement when the malt was added. I decided to only fill the kettle with 4 gal of water (recipe called for 4.7 gal) and see if my 7lb grain bill would fit. I kept the water chemistry the same for the 4 gal. With some splash and spillage, most of the grain fit my kettle, filling it to the brim. I was able to achieve a preboil gravity of 1.050. After removing and squeezing the bag, I appeared to collect around 3.5 gal of wort (original recipe was shooting for 4 gal preboil). To avoid any boil over, decided to leave the volume alone and go ahead with the boil. The only other adjustment I made was a last minute decision to add my last hop addition at 5 min instead of a flame out steep. Original gravity came to 1.060 which was way off from the recipe but as stated this brew was for experimentation purposes only. |
